In mijn 15 jaar als audicien zie ik het telkens weer: mensen wachten vaak te lang met het aanpakken van gehoorverlies. Soms uit schaamte, soms omdat het “wel meevalt”. Maar die eerste signalen zijn juist zó belangrijk.
Wat me het meest raakt, is de opluchting die ik zie bij mensen als ze weer zonder moeite gesprekken kunnen volgen – en het besef dat ze daarmee ook hun brein beschermen. Dat is precies waarom ik dit werk met zoveel liefde doe.
Goed horen is méér dan alleen geluid opvangen. Het is uw verbinding met de mensen om u heen – uw kinderen, kleinkinderen, buren, vrienden. Het is weer meedoen met een gesprek in een restaurant of op een verjaardag, genieten van een koorrepetitie of gewoon een praatje maken op de markt.
Wat veel mensen niet weten, is dat gehoorverlies ook effect heeft op het brein. Wanneer u minder goed hoort, moeten uw hersenen voortdurend extra hard werken om gesprekken te begrijpen. Dat kost energie – en gaat ten koste van functies zoals geheugen en concentratie.
Daarbij zie ik vaak dat mensen zich sociaal terugtrekken omdat horen lastig wordt. En juist dat contact met anderen is wat ons brein scherp houdt
Steeds meer wetenschappers zijn het erover eens: gehoorverlies heeft een directe relatie met het ontstaan van dementie.
Volgens een groot internationaal onderzoek – het Lancet-rapport – is gehoorverlies verantwoordelijk voor zo’n 8% van alle dementiegevallen wereldwijd. Daarmee is het één van de belangrijkste vermijdbare risicofactoren.
Dat biedt hoop: want als we gehoorverlies op tijd signaleren en aanpakken, kunnen we écht iets doen om ons brein te beschermen.
Wat we weten uit onderzoek:
